About Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island after Phuket, covering about 228.7 square kilometres in the Gulf of Thailand, and is part of Surat Thani Province.1 The island is served by Samui Airport, which opened in 1989 and connects Samui with Bangkok and regional hubs.1 Lamai, where Sandalwood sits, is one of Samui’s principal beaches on the island’s east coast.

Nearby, the golden seated Buddha at Wat Phra Yai (the “Big Buddha” temple) is one of the island’s best-known landmarks,1 while the jungle interior holds the Na Muang Waterfalls among the island’s notable falls.1 Just off Lamai stand Hin Ta and Hin Yai — the celebrated “Grandfather and Grandmother” rocks. Boats from Samui reach the neighbouring isles of Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao for day trips.
